چکیده

Astragalus membranaceus is a famous Chinese medicinal herb. Polysaccharides are the most important functional constituent in Astragalus membranaceus. In the present study, the effects of Astragalus membranaceus polysaccharides (APS) on exercise endurance capacity were evaluated in mice using swimming exercise. The antioxidant properties of APS were also investigated through the 1,1diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The results showed that APS supplementation could prolong swimming times of mice, and enhance exercise endurance capacity. APS possess the ability to retard and lower the production of blood lactate, and prevent the increase of serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) after exercise. In addition, APS possess effective antioxidant potential.

Effects of Astragalus polysaccharides on memory impairment in a diabetic rat model

OBJECTIVE Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) are active constituents of Astragalus membranaceus. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of APS on memory impairment in a diabetic rat model and their mechanisms. METHODS A diabetic model was established in 50 male Wistar rats with streptozotocin intra-peritoneal injection. A blood glucose level higher than 16.7 mmol/L obtained 72 hours...

A study on the immune receptors for polysaccharides from the roots of Astragalus membranaceus, a Chinese medicinal herb.

The immunopotentiating effect of the roots of Astragalus membranaceus, a medicinal herb, has been associated with its polysaccharide fractions (Astragalus polysaccharides, APS). We herein demonstrate that APS activates mouse B cells and macrophages, but not T cells, in terms of proliferation or cytokine production. Fluorescence-labeled APS (fl-APS) was able to selectively stain murine B cells, ...

The effect of Astragalus polysaccharides on attenuation of diabetic cardiomyopathy through inhibiting the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways in high glucose -stimulated H9C2 cells

BACKGROUND Apoptosis plays a critical role in the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DC). Astragalus polysaccharides (APS), an extract of astragalus membranaceus (AM), is an effective cardioprotectant. Currently, little is known about the detailed mechanisms underlying cardioprotective effects of APS. The aims of this study were to investigate the potential effects and mechanisms of APS on...

Astragalus membranaceus improves exercise performance and ameliorates exercise-induced fatigue in trained mice.

Astragalus membranaceus (AM) is a popular "Qi-tonifying" herb with a long history of use as a Traditional Chinese Medicine with multiple biological functions. However, evidence for the effects of AM on exercise performance and physical fatigue is limited. We evaluated the potential beneficial effects of AM on ergogenic and anti-fatigue functions following physiological challenge. Male ICR strai...
